Eye surgery?

My glasses are breaking, and they get irritating as the day goes on.Replacement ear pieces to fix break: discontinued
Replacement frames in their entirety: discontinued
New frames, old lenses: not possible
So I'm stuck with potentially getting new glasses...
Eye appointment: $85-$119
Lenses: $220
Anti-reflective coating: $125
Transition (shadding): $310
Frames: $150-$200
Minimum cost for glasses I would like: $765
Maximum cost for glasses I would like: $890
In short... fuck that shit. It will cost me in the neighborhood of $800-$900 a year to wear glasses. To get new replacements now would be a substantial upfront cost. Good thing I have insurance! Wait... no eye care coverage. The ONE thing I need good coverage on and a lot of insurance companies still don't provide it.
so I started calling Lasik places today.
Depending on what surgery I had and how extensive the correction to my eyes (I imagine it would be fairly extensive for my poor vision), it will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $800-$2,000 an eye. I'm looking at a maximum cost of $4000, with costs more realistically being somewhere around $3,600.
The thing is, depending on the company, that's paid w/out interest over 12 to 24 months. It's a lot easier to afford $330 or less a month than it is to pay damn near a grand up front. And there are tax season bonuses coming up... as much as I would like a new couch...
Jesus, where are you getting ripped off for glasses? :p My last pair was $220 + $60 for the optomitrist. That got me frames (with magnetic polarized lense sunglasses clip), lenses (plastic, i can’t stand polycarb), anti-scratch coating, and a hard metal case with seprate sunglasses clip storage.
But that’s besides the point. :) I was just talking with david the other day, cause the pair of glasses i’ve had forever broke suddenly friday afternoon. Boink, straight in half at the nose bridge, guess my OCD cleaning of every speck on the lenses wore the things down (i can’t stand anything but perfectly clear lenses). I’ve had a new pre$cription (your spam filter shat itself over that word) for a year, but it was a lot stronger than my old one, and you know how it is the first week or so when you switch to a stronger pre$cription! UGH! It’s like your looking thru someone else’s glasses. Then he told me you was getting lasik.
I really wish you good luck with that. I’ve wanted it for a while, but i’m too chicken to get it. Plus my pre$cription is still changing, and i’m and old man at 26. You’re nearsighted right? Any astigmatism? The latter has gotten worse for me over the last year or so.
From the way david described it, it sounds like it would make you happy, so i say as long as you do you research, and get it done from the right people, go for it!

Hmmm, I’m iffy on the whole Lasik thing. I’ve heard equal number of horror stories and success stories. The one big problem I have with it is that it’s not been around long enough to see the long term effects of the surgery on aging eyes. I’m always thinking, “what if I go blind at 50 because of this surgery?” Hence, this is why I still wear glasses and/or contact lenses.
On a side note, I have a hookup with a glasses frame manufacturing company. They are having a sale in about 2 weeks. If there’s a specific “type” of frame you wear, I could see what they have and grab a few. Worst case, you hate them all and give them away. We’re talking $10 to $20 for frames that run $300+ at retail.
